Message from the President
There are always more jobs than there people to fill them--that is, in the VOLUNTEER world.

It would make Willard Poteat's job a lot easier if he had more help in folding, addressing, and stamping the monthly newsletter.

Our East of the River Meals on Wheels has all dozen slots filled on the Operating Committee--EXCEPT for a chair person. Ada Carter will continue till June 1, but then we need a replacement--???

Vince and Kathy don't need people to tell them where the trashy spots are, but they do need other like-minded souls to help them keep the neighborhood clean.

If you're doing spring cleaning, remember that Holy Comforter is a depository for clean useable clothing to be passed on to the needy, and that we also collect non-perishable food for the Community Pantry operated out of East Washington Heights Baptist Church.

--Franklin Senger, President

CENSUS 2000--BLESSING IN DISGUISE

The official results of the Census 2000 indicate a great disparity in population representation within the District of Columbia. results highlight the population disparity between the eight wards.

At a recent Town Hall Meeting chaired by Councilmember Kevin Chavous held on Thursday, April 19, 2001 at the Metropolitan Boys and Girls Club in Northeast, significant statistical data accumulated from the Census 2000 indicate the Council must consider "Ward Redistricting".

As meeting dates/time become available, periodically check with the www.pressroom.com/~anc7b/calendar.htm.

D.C.GENERAL UPDATE

  • D.C. General is not closing.
  • The annual 100,000 hospital visits for outpatient and specialty care can still be treated at D.C. General.
  • The 55,000 visits to the emergency room can still be treated at D.C. General.
  • Health care for the uninsured will not suffer under the new contract. The status quo has brought us low life expectancy for African-American men, the highest AIDS death rate in the nation and a host of other unacceptable health indices.
  • Other hospitals will have the ability to absorb patients now treated at D.C. General Hospital. There are 5,000 licenses for beds in the District, with 3,000 beds being utilized daily.
  • Greater Community Hospital can support the necessary inpatient bed capacity to care for D.C.General Hospital patients.

If you have questions about health care, call 442.9195 for more information, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.-- 5:00 p.m.

HILLCREST IS A LITTLE CLEANER

Thanks to those who participated in the Hillcrest-Naylor Gardens cleanup, our neighborhood is a little cleaner. Rain didn't stop a determined group of residents from cleaning up the Branch-Erie-Southern Avenue triangle and a stretch of Naylor Road near Naylor Gardens on Saturday, March 31.Actually it only rained for an hour, and very lightly. Participating in the cleanup were Mary and Phi Hammond, Andrea Johnson, Linda Jo Smith (representing herself and PEPCO) and Rodney Newman (representing himself and the Clean City office). Neither of them lives in Hillcrest or Naylor Gardens but they came over to help, as they always do. Altogether, we collected over 50 bags of trash, plus tires, fenders, mattresses, bicycle parts, and you-name-it.

Thank you, Noris Green, Rodney Stewart, and the DPW crew, for supplying the bags and supporting our cleanup effort.

Another cleanup event took place in Hillcrest on April 14. A few residents cleaned the grassy area at the top of Hillcrest Drive, raking leaves, clearing brush, and bagging litter. It made a big difference. Check the www.hillcrestDC.com photo gallery for photos of these and other Hillcrest event. --Kathy Chamberlain, ANC 7B05 Commissioner
