Call boxes were once vital to police and fire communications in Washington, D.C. Hillcrest's most prominent call box, on Branch Ave. and U Street, S.E., was missing its back, and the glass dome at the top was cracked. Hillcrest resident Bob Bush fashioned a new plywood back and purchased a new glass dome. Bush, Vince Spaulding, and Kathy Chamberlain bought paint, brushes, and got to work. As a finishing touch, a red light bulb was placed inside the glass dome.
