Hillcrest residents made a hit on Saturday, June 22 with the 9th Annual Garden Tour on Westover Drive, SE. We had about 80 happy folks who walked Westover Drive to view the magnificent homes and enchanting gardens, stopping along the way for ice tea and cookies Vincent Spaulding was our architectural historian and Ed Wilhelm was our garden guide-Ed has been with us for many years and continues to do an excellent job. After seeing the event listed in the Washington Post, a former resident (who now lives in Howard County) whose father built the first house on Westover Drive in 1936 gave us a detailed history of the Westover Drive enclave an growing up in the neighborhood. His story about the lady who gave him a penny as a Halloween treat was a real crowd pleaser. Many thanks to the committee-Paula Spaulding (event Chair) who invited her neighbors on Westover Drive to participate in the garden tour); Marvin Bowser (the Chair for next year), Kathy Chamberlain, Alyce Foster, and Mary Hammond (who started the Hillcrest Garden Tour nine years ago) and Ed Wilhelm. The refreshments (most were donated by Hillcrest residents) were served after the tour at the Spauldings and a good time was had by all. See you next year for our 10th Annual Garden Tour which will feature homes in the heart of old Hillcrest (32nd and 33rd Streets).
