A Brief History of Engine Co. 19

Chemical Company No. 2 was organized and placed in service on November 13, 1911, at 2813 Pennsylvania Ave, SE. It was considered a suburban company at that time. (Note: In photo of horse drawn apparatus lettering on front of firehouse - "Chemical Co. 2"..)

On January 1, 1921, the last of the Chemical companies was converted to a regular engine company and equipped with a hose wagon and pumper. Chemical Company No. 2 in Randle Highlands was renumbered Engine 19.

Engine Co. 19 was the last company in the department to switch from horse drawn apparatus to motorized apparatus. This occurred in 1925. From that time no horses were used in regular fire service.
