On Saturday, May 22nd, over 200 volunteers showed up to participate in a cleanup and beautification project of Pennsylvania Avenue, from the east side of the Sousa Bridge to the District line at Southern Avenue, SE. Volunteers cleaned bus shelters, painted fire hydrants, painted boarded up buildings, removed graffiti from public trash receptacles and storefronts along the avenue, and remove light litter. Volunteers weeded and planted flowers at Twining Park, and spruced up several other community gardens. DeeJay Mike Chase from Magic 102.3 FM radio station conducted on-site, on-air hosting of the event. DC Mayor Anthony Williams stopped by to show his support. The Lysol Corporation and the Keep Washington, D.C. Beautiful, Inc. co-sponsored this well attended event, in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup and the Pennsylvania Ave. East Revitalization Task Force.
