Twining Square is a small park on Pennsylvania Ave., S.E. between 27th and 28th St., S.E. It shows great potential, with its cobblestone walkway, shade trees, and overall shape, but has suffered from neglect over the years. It suffered additional insult in February 2000 when a truck lost control and destroyed most of the shrubs on one side. The National Park Service has agreed to work with "Friends of Twining Square" to make this park a showpiece. The first meeting of "Friends of Twining Square" took place on Sunday, April 9th. The adopt-a-park agreement between the National Park Service and Friends of Twining Square was officially signed on Saturday, April 29th, 2000 during a kickoff event in which many neighbors participated. Contact Kathy Chamberlain at (kathychamberlain at starpower dot net) if you would like to be a "Friend of Twining Square". Under the "Friends" program, neighbors perform maintenance chores such as weeding, trimming, raking, at minimum, while the NPS does the heavy-duty work of mowing and anything that involves power tools. Friends also recommend to the NPS any changes they want (i.e. paving, un-paving, benches, fountains) and the NPS takes this under consideration. Friends can recommend and plant flowers but, for obvious reasons, the NPS has to pre-approve the type of plant and location. |
