November 2022
A Message from the HCCA Leadership
November is the Season to Give Thanks
By Villareal “VJ” Johnson
November is almost here, and we should be thankful. As we settle into fall, we can enjoy the colors of the foliage and how they are just as diverse and captivating as those of us who call Hillcrest home.
The funny thing about fall is that it is the signal for winter. The leaves need raking, wood needs stacking, and summer clothes need packing. The transition gives us a lot to think about as we prepare for colder days.
The Hillcrest Community Civic Association (HCCA) leadership is also in transition. Approval of the by-laws and election of officers will occur during the November general body meeting. If possible, we need to meet sooner than later. If you are available to meet this Saturday, October 29, from 11:00 am-noon, to approve the by-laws and discuss leadership nominees, please click here. Starbucks Skyland Hosted its First Coffee with a Cop
On October 5, Starbucks in the Skyland Town Center hosted its first Coffee with a Cop, a national program that brings police officers and the communities they serve together over coffee. They used the opportunity to discuss issues and learn more about each other. The Ward 7 event attracted Chief Robert Contee, a former Patrol Chief of the 6th District, which encompasses Hillcrest. Since its inception in 2011, Coffee with a Cop events have served to build trust and help foster a sense of community in large and small communities.

Lidl Skyland Opens to Much Fanfare
Several Hillcrest residents and the Ward 7 community joined Mayor Muriel Bowser, Ward 7 Councilmember Vincent Gray, executives from Lidl, and other political leaders in the ribbon cutting and preview of the new Lidl supermarket in the Skyland Town Center on September 27. It was a party-like atmosphere as this major development in the Skyland Town Center has taken several decades to come to fruition. Lidl is the first new grocery store to open east of the river in over a decade and is located at 2224 Town Center Drive SE.
