THE HILLCREST HEARTBEAT
October 2022

A Message from the HCCA Leadership

As the Seasons Change, So Does the HCCA
By Villareal “VJ” Johnson

For some, fall is the ideal time of the year. Not to compete with winter, spring, or summer, autumn is a season of beautiful rustic colors and nostalgic smells and tastes. From greens to yellows to reds, the trees serve as a natural kaleidoscope. The crisp morning air carries the scent of smoldering wood from fire pits, coupled with freshly brewed coffee, pumpkin spice, or apple cider, that warm your spirit. The opportunity to dress in your favorite wool sweater or jacket to go apple picking, to a pumpkin patch, or to a local winery, are just a few reasons many people love autumn.

The Hillcrest Community Civic Association (HCCA) kicked off the fall season with its annual event, Hillcrest Day. This cherished event, which started in 2012, was postponed for two years due to COVID-19. Reimagined this year, Hillcrest Day offered neighbors the opportunity to listen to live musical performances, fellowship with new and old friends, enjoy painting, sample new foods, and express themselves through their uniquely decorated baskets and blankets. If you were there, please share your pictures as we would like to have them for our archives and to share them on our website. Read More >>>

Hillcrest Celebrates Community

Hillcrest marked the end of September with a number of family-friendly activities to bring in the fall season with a bang. Our lovely east of the river community celebrated Art All Night on September 23, Hillcrest Day on September 24, and Porchfest on September 25. Thank you to all the organizers and planners who made all these events possible.

Art All Night – Ward 7 Edition

DC Art All Night took place on Friday, September 23 in Wards 7 and 8. Participants were treated to a host of visual and performing arts, including painting, photography, sculpture, crafts, fashion, music, literary arts, dance, theater, film, and poetry, in indoor and outdoor and public and private spaces, including local businesses and restaurants. In the Hillcrest-Penn Branch communities, late-night events were hosted by the Pennsylvania Avenue East Main Street. Attendees enjoyed interactive art, vendors, and music at the DC Dream Center, a live stage at the Shops at Penn Branch, a Glow in the Dark in the Park for youngsters, and more.

Hillcrest Day 2022: Blankets & Baskets

Hillcrest Day is an annual event hosted by the HCCA to bring together families, businesses, organizations, and politicians for a fun-filled day of food, games and engagement. This year’s event was held on Saturday, September 24, on a perfect fall day. The annual event began in 2012, but was put on hold due to the global pandemic.

This year, the HCCA urged attendees to come back outside and bring their blankets and baskets. To make it interesting, the organization received a donation of a fall basket to offer to the winner of the best display. The Miles family was the lucky winner. Attendees were treated to live musical performances which included a cellist and a jazz violinist. A few politicians were on hand to enjoy the day’s celebration as well.

Porchfest DC Southeast Edition

The 4th Annual Porchfest DC Southeast Edition was on Sunday, September 25 in the Hillcrest community. Birthed from the volunteer power of residents from the Penn Branch and Hillcrest communities, the community enjoyed a day of free performances on porches, lawns, and sidewalks. Over the years, the concept of hosting performances on front porches has evolved. The day’s event started with a wellness activity and a children’s party. Attendees visited porches and enjoyed vendor villages throughout the day. It culminated with a “Second Line” (New Orleans’ style jazz parade) heading to the new Skyland Town Center for a final performance.

In Washington, DC, Porchfest was first hosted in the Takoma Park neighborhood and later celebrated by Adams Morgan, Rhode Island Avenue, and most recently, in neighborhoods in Southeast.

Hillcrest’s Own Monica Evans Recognized by National Association

According to the Washington Informer, the National Association of Election Officials has certified Monica Holman Evans, the executive director of the DC Board of Elections, as an election and registration administrator, considered the highest achievement for elections officials. Evans is one of the few Black chief executive elections officers in the country, the association said in a statement.

“The District of Columbia is indeed fortunate to have Ms. Holman Evans as one of the top designated election executives in America,” said Tim Mattice, its director. “Obtaining and maintaining CERA status means that she has committed to a career-long process of continuing education to improve the electoral process in the District and the nation.”

Join us in wishing Monica a hearty congratulations on this achievement. She has served on the HCCA board as treasurer for nearly two decades.
